TRANSIT SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

We believe in transit supportive development surrounding our services and across the Southeastern Pennsylvania region, both to spur transit ridership, deliver economic development, and benefit the environment.

SEPTA is creating a comprehensive Transit Supportive Community Development program to deliver a seamless, lifestyle transit network. This program will support SEPTA’s efforts to implement its Strategic Plan, SEPTA Forward, and aligns with the Authority’s vision of transit at the core of our region.

As a major driver of the regional economy, SEPTA recognizes that our own inventory of real estate assets, as well as adjacent properties, can be leveraged by working in partnership with the communities it serves.

The Transit Supportive Community Development Program Statement lays out the principles, goals and benefits of this initiative. As a guiding document, it is the foundation of SEPTA’s commitment to a robust and thoughtful Transit Supportive Community Development Program.

SEPTA Transit Supportive Community Development Program Goals

Increase transit ridership and enhance quality of life at and around SEPTA stations by encouraging and supporting high quality transit supportive community development within walking distance of SEPTA stations.

Ensure social equity through the balanced development of mixed-use and mixed-income projects in and around SEPTA station areas.

Enhance the stability of SEPTA’s financial base through the value capture strategies of transit-oriented development (TOD).

Reduce reliance on automobiles by increasing and enhancing accessibility to SEPTA multi-modal transportation.

Next Steps

As a part of advancing the Transit Supportive Community Development program, SEPTA will create a comprehensive inventory of SEPTA owned properties and evaluation criteria for Transit Supportive Community Development suitability.  Also in the next two years, SEPTA will be developing a Transit Supportive Community Development Guideline document that lays out the program’s mission, goals, and strategies in more detail; provides clear guidance to developers on construction on or near SEPTA’s property; encourages TOD with our partners; and details the overall process.
