Zero-Emission Bus

Following the completion of the ZEB Master Plan, SEPTA will focus on the following initiatives as we continue to refine a long-term transition strategy:
- Implementing 10 vehicle FCEB demonstration project to study the performance of FCCEBs in real-world conditions
- Executing a $23.3 million Low-No emissions grant awarded by the FTA in the summer of 2022 to prepare SEPTA facilities for the electrical needs of ZEBs and enhance redundancy
- Complete detailed facility specific analysis to further examine the cost and scope implications of the transition from diesel-electric hybrids to ZEBs at SEPTA’s bus depots. The first phase of this technical analysis is focused on the feasibility, logistics and cost associated with hydrogen storage and fueling infrastructure and can be seen in the Facility Analysis Report. The second phase of this study will focus on the cost and implications of making significant electrical infrastructure upgrades for BEBs and this will be completed later in 2023.
- Working to return existing Proterra BEBs to service at SEPTA’s Southern Depot
- Updating the BEB range analysis based on Bus Revolution which is SEPTA’s comprehensive bus network redesign
SEPTA will continue to work with external partners to identify and secure new funding for the fleet transition. Converting to a zero-emissions fleet will require significant capital spending for charging stations, hydrogen fueling infrastructure, electrical upgrades, and purchasing more expensive buses. There would also be a considerable cost for a new garage if one is required to accommodate the ZEB transition. SEPTA will need an increase in capital funding from a combination of federal, state, and local sources to achieve the transition to a zero-emission fleet.
